Wairoa Stream: 3rd year of planting by Kerikeri Primary School

After several weather postponements Kerikeri Primary School were finally able to complete their 2019 planting along the Wairoa Stream bank.

Four members of Friends of Wairoa Stream who were present as guides, were really impressed when the 15 students planted all 150 plants in only two hours and were looking around for more plants.

The objective of the students is to transform a patch of Blackberry, Tobacco weed, Gorse and Kikiyu into primary forest over a long period of time. Slow growing Rimu, Miro. Kahikatea and a few Kauri were planted together with pioneer species of Kanuka and Manuka and other shrubs and sub-canopy trees grown by the Kerikeri Shade House Volunteers.

Kerikeri Primary School will definitely be back again next year said Deputy Principal Rosemary Murphy.
